Why is onboarding a strategic lever for companies?
Onboarding is an important stage in an employee's career. It sets the tone for the rest of the collaboration and, when successful, provides a solid foundation for the new employee's performance and job satisfaction.
For the company, onboarding represents a key retention and performance issue. According to a Workelo study, a recruit who goes through a complete onboarding process is 58% more likely to stay with the company. In terms of performance, 62% of employees who have undergone onboarding have achieved their objectives within the year, compared with just 17% of those who have not.
What subjects should new employees be trained in when they arrive?
Whenan employee joins a new company, he or she knows little about the company or the job. Training must therefore focus on 4 main themes:
- Company culture: what are your operating rules? How do you make decisions? What principles must you respect? What are your values? What behaviors are expected?
- Business skills: a junior employee must undergo business training adapted to the company's reality. For an expert employee, the aim is to train him/her in internal work methodologies and to help him/her understand the challenges associated with his/her new position.
- Work tools: what software do you use?
- Soft skills: in some cases, employees are trained in soft skills (conflict management, communication, etc.) as soon as they join the company.
Of course, it's best to dilute training actions over time, so as not to overload the employee with information. Traditional learning formats (PDF booklets, Powerpoint) also have their limitations. Experience has shown that they do not allow for optimal concentration and commitment. It is therefore preferable to turn to playful methods such as gamification.
Gamification, the driving force behind engaging onboarding
Gamification is a method of integrating game elements (points, badges, rankings, levels, quizzes, challenges) into learning processes. The aim? Motivate participants by rewarding them for their progress and encouraging them to reach objectives.
Its main benefits? Employees adopt an active attitude, and gamification tools adapt to people's natural learning abilities to keep them motivated and engaged.
Examples of interactive content to be used in the integration process
To make your onboarding training stimulating and engaging, here are some concrete examples of interactive content:
- Gamified quizzes: integrate quizzes with points and rankings to test new recruits' knowledge while creating a friendly, competitive atmosphere;
- Team challenges: organize competitions between employees to encourage collaboration while reinforcing their skills ;
- Interactive videos: offer videos where employees are asked to share their feedback;
- Scenario simulation: put employees in situations they will encounter in their day-to-day work so that they can train in a safe environment;
- Micro learning : give employees access to short training modules that can be easily consulted;
- Virtual role-playing: For example, employees can play the role of a manager faced with a conflict situation or an unhappy customer. The aim is to enable them to develop their interpersonal and management skills, while receiving personalized feedback after each stage of the game.
