Pink October Challenge: get your teams involved this autumn

Pink October

1. But what is breast cancer?

Pink October Challenge for breast cancer is now the most widespread cancer worldwide. In 2020, 2.3 million women worldwide were diagnosed with the disease, and 685,000 died. In the same year, 7.8 million women had been diagnosed with breast cancer in the previous five years. Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death among women worldwide.

Today, several risk factors have been identified. While some are known to be highly preventable, others are unfortunately unavoidable. Female gender is the highest risk factor for breast cancer. Only 0.5% to 1% of breast cancers develop in men. Fortunately, by identifying symptoms as early as possible, breast cancer can be cured in 9 out of 10 cases. That's why it's so important to raise awareness of breast screening... and Pink October plays a key role in this!

2. October means October...pink!

To understand the origins of the operation, we need to go back a few years... In 1985, in the United States, theAmerican Cancer Society, in partnership with Imperial Chemical Industries, organized a month-long campaign, from October 1 to 31, to raise awareness of breast cancer screening and mammography: Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Initially, this was just a communications campaign, but actions have been organized for the occasion over the years.

A few years later, in 1992, Evelyn H.Lauderet, Vice-President of Estée Lauder, was in remission. In collaboration with Self Magazine, she created the "Pink Ribbon" association. The aim of this association is to represent women's fight against breast cancer. Estée Lauder distributed pink ribbons in its New York boutiques.

And why pink ribbons? This color was chosen because it's "feminine, soft, joyful and evokes good health, everything that cancer is not", according to the Breast Cancer Action association.

A few months later, Evelyn Lauder created " The Breast Cancer Research Foundation " to support innovation in clinical and genetic research. The Breast Cancer Research Foundation was born, along with the pink ribbon and prevention campaign as we know them.
